Ye Olde Bull Ring Tavern

The pub, with history since 1365, people called after the ring where bull baiting took place until finally banned in 1835. It did not start as a sport. However, as a means of rendering tough meat tender. It was believed that violent exertion brought this tenderisation about. In 1376, an ordinance was pronounced that made it illegal to sell meat that had not been baited by dogs. What we now know is that the bulldog was especially bred for this purpose. This tavern is a fabulously externally beamed building. In the lounge, there is splendid ancient oak panelling around the fireplace. The windows are from the 14th century. There have been many reports over the years of the pub being haunted, with for the most part by black shadowy figures and sounds. Furthermore, there is history of a former housekeeper, or proprietor, haunting the first floor. She is dressed in a long black or grey dress, with has a bunch of keys on a belt. Furthermore, it exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include a little coal-boy, who burned to death when the cellar caught fire.
