The Anvil Lodge

22 Aston Street, Shifnal

Rather curiously, this appears to be a rare pub name. The anvil was the iron flat face that blacksmiths used to hammer out their heat-softened metals into horseshoes, ploughshares, and the like. This Anvil Inn presents as an early Victorian pub on two storeys and white painted. It has history from 1701 but was very probably built this on the site of an older inn. Most of the problems here are with poltergeists and their antics in the beer cellar. However, previous licensees have reported a dark apparition that appears in a mirror over a fireplace. The figure of a phantom then slips across the room and behind the bar where it disappears.
