The Cock and Bottle

61 Skeldergate, York, North Yorkshire

This pub exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include a splendidly dressed man, said to be the Duke of Buckingham, George Villiers, who had a house on the street. After the Battle of Worcester, 1651, he retired to York to work as an alchemist, with his workshop was the site of the present inn. Many local people have seen the venerable lord dressed in green. Wearing his finery, he often appears to women, with one proprietor found his ghost watching her in her bathroom. The pub name is perhaps a ‘combination’ name of two pubs. The Cock is a 14th century pub name and often indicated that cockfighting took place on the premises.
