The Drovers

Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, Ripon, North Yorkshire

An isolated inn out on the moors, it provided food and shelter for cattle and sheep drovers over the centuries. The last shop in Dallowgill was Greygreen Farm, selling sweets and cigarettes, which closed in the 1940s. Once there was a monument to mark the extinction of wolves in the area and this was replaced to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The inn exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include an individual arriving in the early hours of the morning, kicking on the door and shouting. Legend has it that a drover, who lost his way, found the inn during the night and then wandered away when they refused to let him in. His body was later found a mile away, buried in a snowdrift
