The Wellington Heifer
The Wellington Heifer, Church view, Ainderby Steeple
The Wellington heifer was a huge beast weighing almost a tonne. In 1817 it was featured on banknotes issued by the Craven Bank. The pub is haunted by the ghost of a man who was murdered by a previous proprietor. The victim of the proprietor’s violence was a travelling peddler who had arrived there in the mid-1700s. The ghost has also been heard in the lane outside the pub accompanied by the sound of rattling chains.
