Gladys Saxton and her cleaner, Margaret Harrison, were killed in a fire at this building in 1945. Since that date a woman wearing a long black dress has been seen by guests in the building. There is also a report of a phantom highwayman who was witnessed standing in a doorway immediately in front of the Plough. On the road nearby a phantom woman has caused several car accidents. Early on winter mornings witnesses have seen her run out into the carriageway and then vanish. Legend has it that this is the ghost of a young girl who drowned either by accident or suicide.
