Mug house was a 17th century expression for an alehouse, with this pub is distinguished by having been built within a graveyard. The Constable of Claines, 1638, closed six public houses in Claines in an attempt to quell the plague. The Mug sits among the final resting places of over 15,000 people, buried at Claines over the centuries. Legend has it that the graveyard and the pub are haunted by some of those unfortunate souls.
