The New Inn
Market Square, Pembridge, Leominster, Herefordshire
One of the most exquisite and beautiful of ‘Olde English Innes’, this externally white painted and black timbered 14th century hostelry is in a class of its own. Inside are flagstone floor, oak doors with peg latches, with a curved settle, which may have been part of an indoors cock fighting pit. Two ghosts regularly haunt the inn. One , witnesses describe, as a beautiful young woman, awaiting the return of husband or lover from some foreign field of war. She selectively appears as a solid apparition weeping to the women on the premises. The other is a soldier dressed in a scarlet tunic and carrying a sword, which suggests he had been an officer. Coincidentally, as he appears there is the muted sound of a beating drum.
