The Kings Head Inn

1 Bridge Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire

One of the main entry points to Salisbury from the north this large yellow stone-built inn on the bridge has had a number of name changes over the years. The Kings Head Inn has been known as the County Hotel and the Kings Head and Brewery which is recorded as being at Fisherton Anger since 1526. In 1623 John Taylor, the 'Water Poet', demonstrated that the Avon could be made navigable by rowing his boat from London and on reaching Fisherton Bridge he lodged at the Kings Head Inn. Various ghostly manifestations have been witnessed by domestic staff on one of the upper floors. These include the ghosts of a number of men and women who drowned nearby and whose bodies were taken to the Kings Head.
