The Volunteer Inn
31 Broad St, Lyme Regis, Dorset, Dorset
The name of this inn was a widespread one throughout England as it referred to Volunteer regiments that went off to fight abroad, especially in France. These regiments continued well into the 20th century. There was a Volunteer Training Corps in the First World War and the Local Defence Volunteers in the Second World War. People call this inn called after a volunteer regiment. It founded in Lyme Regis in 1794 to fight off the expected French invasion of the south coast. The pub is older even than that date. It exhibits ghostly manifestations. These include three card playing Royalist officers from the English Civil War. Others have described them as wearing colourful musketeer uniforms and drinking from tankards.
