Lewdown, West Devon
Originally, called Lyu Trencharde, the Celtic name for a river meaning the bright one, Lewtrenchard Manor is named after the Trenchard family who lived here in the 13th century. Here we have a most superior ghost who rejoices in the name of Old Madame. She appears to be dressed in early 20th-century clothing of a long frock with puffed sleeves. Witnesses have seen Old Madame wandering the corridors and the dining room. Another ghost has been seen outside the hotel. Called simply the White Lady she walks by and then disappears.
