The Devils Stone Inn
Shebbear, Beaworthy, Devon
The ghost of a naughty little girl of about seven still wanders this isolated 14th century pub. She is believed to be the daughter of a man who, an assailant took this person’s life, here many years ago. Often Witnesses see her in the company of a grey bearded man. This child-ghost is noted for merry pranks, with pulling at peoples’ hair. Each year, the villagers and bell ringers turn over a boulder weighing half a ton, to make sure the devil is not hiding beneath. This has its roots in pagan ritual. It gave rise to the pub’s name.
