The Old Corner Cupboard
83 Gloucester St, Winchcombe, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
A stone built pub, this pub is visually made for haunting. It was once part of a local monastery. A ghostly child , witnesses see, with heard, toddling around during the day. Furthermore, there is lore on phantom monks having taken up residence in the building. The phantom of a tall hooded character travels along the road through the village, past this pub, with towards the graveyard. He , witnesses report, as gliding along, two feet above the ground and, apparently, without a care in the world. Wearing a white habit with black scapular, this phantom may have been a monk at Hailes Abbey, Winchcombe. That Cistercian abbey was destroyed by Henry 8th in 1539. Excavations in the late 1970s at the abbey uncovered two stone coffins, thought to contain the remains of Saxon kings.
