Hotel de la Bere

Southam, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

A magnificent hotel with history from the 15th century, it was once a manor house owned by the Delabere family. Prior to that, the building was owned by Henry Bohun, the Earl of Hereford. His youngest daughter was given the Manor as a dowry when she married Henry Bolingbroke, who later became Henry IV. He annexed it to the Duchy of Lancaster. Later, James 1st granted the Manor to Robert Cecil, the Earl of Salisbury. The Earl then sold it to Richard Delabere. For some years, it was a private school for girls and it was during that period that the resident ghost moved in. She was a nanny who took her responsibilities seriously and after some scandal, she hanged herself in her bedroom. When she manifests, sobservers describe him as having her hair scraped back into a bun, with a dark grey or black uniform with a leather belt.
