The Royal Castle Hotel
The Quay, Dartmouth
When Mary, the wife of William 3rd, initially came to England she stayed at this hotel although why she chose to stay here is a mystery. Witnesses have reported seeing her as a ghost in period dress and her carriage has been heard moving around in the courtyard outside. Between mid September and late November at 2am guests have been woken by a large clattering sound over the cobbles. A ghostly carriage arrives and a passenger alights and walks into the hotel. Witnesses have also seen another ghost described as ‘a nasty little man, rather like a jockey with an evil face’. Locals know him to have been a man called Darke Chase who had been an ostler at the Royal Castle.
