Chequers Inn

75 High Street, Lytchett Matravers, Poole

The girl ghost who first appeared at the Chequers many years ago has been given the nickname, ‘Pollyanna’. Observers describe her as being in her mid-teens, wearing a domestic head cover, apron, and of a somewhat merry disposition. On one of the pews at St Mary’s parish church is an epitaph to Sir John Maltravers, who was involved in the murder of Edward 2nd in 1327. Subsequently, Maltravers repented of his part in regicide and made amends by insisting he should be buried without a tomb. Furthermore, he required that his body should be interred where all who enter the church would walk over him. Witnesses saw Four headless pallbearers, carrying a coffin, and marching at a fast pace on a road through Lytchett Matravers before suddenly disappearing into a hedge.
