2 Waterloo Rd, Broadstone, Poole, Dorset
Darby was a local man. He hanged himself many years ago. He was not allowed a Christian burial, the custom of treating suicides at that time. His body was interred at a crossroads nearby. Sporadically, his ghost leaves his burial spot. He wanders down to this pub named after him. Over the years, stories have abounded of the ghost of Darby sitting in a bar at this pub with a pint pot of beer. There have been furthermore accounts of his being seen walking in the lane outside. The lesser-, locals knew, co-discoverer of the Theory of Evolution, Alfred Russel Wallace, is buried at Broadstone.
