The White Hart Hotel
Market Place, Sturminster Newton, Dorset
For sheer dramatic history, there is probably no better than the White Hart at this exquisite town. It is an old coaching inn with a most remarkable thatched roof. It is haunted by a handful of ghosts. In 1729, a dreadful fire ripped through Sturminster Newton, with almost the entire town was burned down. Two buildings survived that fire: this pub and the church. One ghost at this inn is a frequently seen woman, dressed in Victorian clothing. She has a mournful expression. She manifests on the ground floor. Her apparition is typically observed in the bar area, as though preparing to clean the room. The other ghosts include children giggling and chattering in the attic rooms. Even more are thought to be the ghosts of people burned to death in the fire of 1729.
