The Bridge Inn
Bridge Hill, Topsham, Exeter, Devon
When Elizabeth visited this eleventh century pub in March 1998, there was no sign of Naughty Nancy, the resident ghost. It was Her Majesty’s first official visit to a pub. The Queen took away a bottle of special brew from the Bridge, saying her husband might well enjoy it. Topsham was once a thriving port with 41 puts and 26 brothels. Locals think that Naughty Nancy took up her ghostly residence at the Bridge Inn during those colourful times. She has been frequently seen, flaunting herself between the several ground floor rooms in Victorian style dress with a low neckline. Parts of the pub building have history from 1083, when it was occupied by artisans and masons building Exeter Cathedral.
