Garniche at the Puesdown
Near Compton Abdale
A spiritualist, who investigated legends of hauntings at the Puesdown, said the resident ghost was that of a former proprietor. This man had enjoyed spying on the female servants in their bedrooms and drilled tiny holes through walls and doors from where he could watch them. On one occasion, he was discovered watching them and one of the women stabbed him through his eye with a long hatpin. Witnesses who have seen the ghost report him wearing an eye patch! There are reports of phantom coaches calling at the inn during the hours of darkness and the ghost of a highwayman shot to death outside the inn appears arrayed in the uniform of his criminal activity. Television channels are often changed while people are watching and the central heating is turned on and off by invisible hands.
