Napoleon Inn

High Street, Boscastle, Cornwall

Built in 1549, the Napoleon has a splendid ghost nicknamed ‘Plucker’. He is often seen standing near the fireplace. Guests and drinkers have had their arms tugged and pulled by the ghost. Plucker seems particularly active when there has been some re-decoration in the pub. On one occasion, he managed to take a pile of coins from the safe. He stacked them up next to plastic bags on the bar top. One proprietor was locked into a utility room as a key turned on her, although no one was outside. A recently hung picture crashed from a wall as an elderly woman was watching television. A radiator, well fixed, also fell off a wall. At a nearby cottage, there is occasionally heard the sound of a phantom bell that, people have claimed, to presage a death in Boscastle or out at sea.
