The Carpenters Arms

122 North Street, Middle Barton, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire

Very early examples of pubs called the ‘Carpenters’ carried three pairs of compasses on their inn signs. The mathematical compass appeared in the arms of masons, builders and carpenters during the medieval period. Modern signs for the ‘Carpenters’ usually show a band saw, adze and plane. This is a 16th century thatched pub with a large inglenook fireplace. It is a popular village inn, part brick and white painted on two storeys. The Carpenters’ Arms exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include the ghost of a child who died here in sad circumstances, many years ago. She appears wearing a grey dress and has a most unhappy face.
