Kings Arms Royal Hotel
22 High St, Godalming, Surrey
A right Royal Phantom still lurks here three centuries after Peter the Great of Russia stayed at this inn with many of his courtiers. Such dreadful things did occur during their residence here in 1698 that since then a poltergeist has haunted those rooms. Reports claim it that Peter the Great is still here as a ghost and people hear kicking off his boots between one and two am. From time to time, glasses and other objects are hurled about in the rooms they had used. Even more extraordinary was the tale of a Godalming woman, Mary Tofts who gave birth to rabbits in 1727. She claimed she had been made pregnant when frightened by a rabbit as she weeded in the garden. Tofts broke the news to the village people here at this inn and those credulous ones believed her.
