Situated across the road from Groombridge Place, this pub dates back to 1585 and has been the home of a ruthless gang of smugglers and also frequented by a number of famous celebrities including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The ghost of an ostler, who worked and died at Groombridge Place has been seen in the pub. Local legends say the ostler, called David Fletcher drowned in the moat in 1808.
