The Queens Head
Butchers Lane, Mereworth, Maidstone, Kent
Many years ago, the publican here was also the local undertaker and he was making his own coffin when he collapsed over it and died. Every now and again, his restless ghost returns to complete the work and when loud knocking sounds , listeners hear, emanating from his old workshop. Elizabeth 1 was the subject of many ‘Queen’s Head’ inn signs. However, she was not always pleased with the results. Investigators were dispatched to check the signs and, if they were displeased with them, the wooden boards were knocked down and burnt. This was by Royal Proclamation of 1563.
