The present building has history dating from 1449 but there has been an inn on the site for much longer. Inside this historic building are oak beams and inglenook fireplaces. It was at one time an important coaching inn between London and Oxford and there is a 19th century Brougham carriage outside. The galleried quarters of the nearby priory hospice are the oldest in the country. Here at this most ancient of inn witnesses have seen an unhappy soul, another White Lady. Her weeping ghost frequently appears sitting at the end of a four-poster bed in one particular room.
