Bull Inn

57-59 Bell St, Henley-on-Thames

At this town early Victorian pub, there have been reports of the odour of candles in one bar, although such has not been used for many years. One night, a man staying here awoke to find a cowled figure bending over him as he lay abed. At the nearby Kenton Theatre a play, The Hanging Wood, was being produced here some thirty years ago. The play, about a woman, Mary Blandy, poisoning her father in 1752, ran into the most curious difficulties during rehearsal. Secured mirrors fell from walls, lights were turned on and off, with doors opened and closed with no one nearby. Then there was the ghostly figure of a young girl who appeared at the back of the theatre, only to disappear when someone addressed her. When a member of the cast mentioned the name “Mary Blandy’’, the girl who had been hanged, a cup lifted several inches from a table, briefly levitated and crashed to the ground.
