The Roebuck Hotel
Oxford Road, Tilehurst, Reading, Berkshire
The ghost that haunts this hotel is from two centuries ago. Both employees and residents have frequently seen it. His appearance usually opens with loud hammering on doors. Then furniture has noisily moves around. Witnesses have heard a man swearing in a loud voice. When his ghost does make an appearance, he is wearing the uniform of a naval officer from the 18th century. For the most part, witnesses see him in the Admiral’s Room. The legend is that he was staying at the Roebuck with his canine companion when a fire broke out. The admiral had been searching for his dog, which had managed to escape through an open window. However, the admiral perished in the flames. There have also been accounts from guests, staying in other bedrooms, where there has been the strong odour of tobacco, objects being spirited away with hammering on walls.
