The inn someone named after the Montagu family of Beaulieu, with history of the building to the 17th century. Many apparitions have , witnesses saw, in the pub, including monks. On occasion, there has been a strong smell of incense, coincidentally with lights turning switching. One apparition at the Montagu Arms is believed to be that of Isabella, Countess of Beaulieu, who died in 1786. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, writer of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, took an intense interest in spiritualism and claimed to have contacted her during a séance. Doyle was also a member of the paranormal organisation, the Ghost Club. The focus of that organisation, then and now, is on the scientific study of alleged paranormal activities in order to prove the existence of paranormal phenomena.
