The Shepherd and Dog

The Street, Fulking, Henfield, West Sussex

An absolute treasure of a pub, it was once used by sheep drovers at local animal fairs and markets. It nestles below the South Downs. The building dates from over 600 years ago. Inside the pub, bucolic artefacts, including shepherds’ crooks, abound. Every area in the country had their own way of counting sheep and in Sussex shepherds counted the sheep in pairs: wuntherum, twotherum, cockerum, cutherum, sheterum, shaterum, wineberrry, wigtail, tarry-diddle, den, with each word counting two sheep. The upstairs accommodation of the pub exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include a former proprietor, Mr. Liquorice, with downstairs by noisy poltergeists.
