The Pilot Boat Inn
Station Road, Bembridge
This is one of the most eccentrically built pubs in the UK. The exterior was converted to resemble a ship in 1935 which is what gives this put its name. The phantom that haunts the pub is not averse to helping himself to the pub spirits behind the bar. This could lead a cynic to believe it is an old sailor who has found a comfortable berth. Employees and customers have reported a presence walking behind or standing beside them followed by a quick glimpse of a figure in black. The theory of an old sailor was borne out by a female psychic who knew nothing of this particular tale. She said that it was the ghost of a smuggler who died in the late 18th century who enjoyed his rum! Now his ghost manifests sitting at the lookout point in the lounge and staring out to sea.
