Amberley Castle- A Relais and Chateaux Hotel
Built nine centuries ago as a bishop’s palace this has an oak portcullis that used to come down each night. There is a 12th century Queen’s Room and Baronial Great Hall and the 14th century walls and battlements enclose a garden. The ghost of a young serving girl called Emily haunts it. She worked in the kitchens. A bishop seduced her. When she became pregnant, her employer dismissed her. Her employer abandoned her to her fate. Some say Emily died in childbirth and she now appears as a ghost, pale and sad, outside the old palace kitchens on the north side of the hotel.
