The Crown and Anchor
33 High St, Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex, Shoreham-by-Sea
There was once a wooden figurehead of St George decorated the front of the nearby Royal George. This was given to Eric Wardroper of the Crown and Anchor when the Royal George closed. This figurehead crashed down in the 1920s. It was replaced by a wooden figurehead of a pirate-bold standing on the prow of a boat. A French girl, brought ashore by a soldier or sailor after the Napoleonic Wars, was abandoned when she became pregnant. She worked here as a serving wench, with then committed suicide by throwing herself from a rear window, with still haunts the pub. Those who have seen the ghost describe her as being pale faced, dressed in grey material and muttering in what sounds like French.
