With history over two centuries, the grounds of the building stand on the original Grand National Steeplechase course The pub provided the meeting place for the 18th century social club, ‘Mock Corporation of Sefton’. The Punch Bowl is a Second-grade protected building, with inside is much in the way of upright beaming and brick built open fires. A sailor, who had drowned at sea, was brought to the Punch Bowl to await an inquest and burial. Since then this ghostly sailor , witnesses have seen, actually floating around the pub. Witnesses have claimed that frequently that only his head and shoulders that appear. However, it is occasionally his whole body. On other occasions, this phantom , witnesses have seen, scrabbling at a grave in the churchyard behind the Punch Bowl Inn.
