This pub someone named after a ghost and poltergeist of years gone by at nearby Hylton Castle. At one time, servants put out a suit of green for the ‘cold lad’, which were removed. Presumably, it was worn to his comfort. witnesses see him, running around the castle naked and, from time to time, smashing crockery, with occasionally appears at this pub. Legend has it that when he manifests at the Cauld Lad, he is wearing a tattered old green cloak.
