The Schooner Hotel and Restaurant
8 Northumberland Street, Alnmouth, Alnwick, Northumberland
The legend behind the ghost at this 17th century coaching inn is of a man who returned from sea and killed his wife, two children and himself in one of the bedrooms. About 25 years ago, a woman was staying at the Schooner with her daughter. This woman awakened in the middle of the night to see the little girl chatting with someone invisible. When she asked the daughter to whom she was talking, the girl replied "The man at the end of my bed". She could not understand why her mother was unable to see him. Over the years, there have been countless visitations by the mariner, unable to leave the scene of the murders and suicide. It is also home to a phantom soldier in the uniform of the First World War, with his tunic buttoned up and puttees. In addition, best of all is the manifestation of a phantom chicken. During investigations by the Poltergeist Society, the Schooner has been recorded as the Most Haunted Hotel in Great Britain. There are reputed to be 60 ghosts in residence, with 3,000 sightings reported over the years.
