The Quaker Coffee House
2 Mechanics Yard, High Row, Darlington, County Durham
Originally, this was three 18th cottages in a yard that was active with such tradesmen as coopers and blacksmiths. It is now called Mechanics Yard. The pub name comes from the historical connection with Mechanics Yard. It has an association with the Quaker movement. At one time, it locals knew it as Betty Hobson’s Yard, with she still haunts the area. This pub exhibits ghostly manifestations. These include a ghost called Ethel, who makes her presence felt through poltergeist activities and frequent appearances in Victorian style clothing.
