There has been a pub on this site for over four centuries. Outside, there remains a mounting block for men (and highwaymen) to mount and dismount from their horses. It is one of these equestrians from many years ago who still haunts the Wheatsheaf. Staff and visitors have heard the clatter of hooves. However, there were no signs of a horse. Then witnesses have seen a tall man in a dark riding cape walk in through the front door. Those who have seen this ghost describe him as a friendly looking cove. At nearby Lumley Castle, a woman killed by monks at a time of religious dissension appears. The Lily of Lumley was the wife of Sir Ralph Lumley. He had those monks executed for her murder. The ghosts of those dead monks appear, walking in the castle grounds, while Lily of Lumley manifests along corridors within the building,
