Black Horse Inn
Hamilton Row, Waterhouses, Durham, County Durham
A late Georgian former coaching inn, it is white painted with black corner stones, with inside it is beamed with open fires. Many years ago, a woman was pushed downstairs into the cellar where she fractured her skull, broke her neck, and later died. She now haunts the Black Horse. However, people have claimed her to be of a quiet disposition, just appearing, and then dissolving. However, there is another, a more sinister ghost. The 13 years old niece of a former licensee ran out of her bedroom screaming on one occasion. She had awakened to find the figure of a strange man standing close to her bed wearing a long black habit or robe. As she screamed, this phantom disappeared.
