Set in one of the most salubrious parts of the capital, in classic mews, this pub exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include the ghost of a young Grenadier officer caught cheating at cards. He was savagely beaten and thrown downstairs to his death. Reports have been made of dark shapes moving about the pub accompanied by chills. On one occasion, a brewery inspector, a former CID man, was burned on the wrist as though by a cigarette. However, no one was near him. It is also haunted by a man who took his own life by electrocuting himself in one of the bathrooms. The pub was once the mess for the Duke of Wellington’s officers. There is a sentry box outside and the former duke’s horse mounting block. A well-, locals knew, medium, Trixie Allingham, said a serious quarrel had taken place here, with there was a ghost in the cellar. The pub was once called the Guardsman, with said to be most haunted in September when the cheating officer died.
