The Sun Inn
7 Church Rd, Barnes, London, Greater London, Richmond upon Thames
Viewed from across Barnes Pond, the Second-grade Sun Inn appears, as it would have done three centuries ago when it was an important coaching inn. It is a typical 18th century building with a slated Mansard roof and other important architectural features, including a winder staircase. It is opposite Barnes Pond, with in April 2001, this pond dramatically emptied overnight. Although a broken drain was suspected, no cause could be conclusively found. It is hard to believe. However, there were murmurs of paranormal involvement. It has since been returned to its previous glory. There have been legends of ghosts and apparitions on Barnes Pond area for many years. They are believed to have been people who had committed suicide or accidentally drowned in the pond. The Sun Inn exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include several ghosts on the top floor, below the Mansard roof. However, there is no precise history from them. They may well have been bodies brought to the pub until inquests could be held. There are also reports of a dog that frequently barks loudly in parts of the pub where there is no such animal.
