Book Haunted Inns and Hotels in Richmond upon Thames

The Ship Inn

10 Thames Bank, Mortlake (SW14), Greater London, Richmond upon Thames

Both the Ship Inn and the large warehouse system adjacent are haunted by the ghost of John Dee, advisor to Elizabeth 1. Dee had lived on Mortlake High Street, nearby. He wrote many books on the occult. Dee attempted to contact ghosts and in May 1582, recorded he had made his first connection with the spirit world through his crystal ball. In 1583, a large mob attacked Dee's home at Mortlake, destroying his collection of books, occult instruments and personal belongings. The attack was probably in response to rumours that Dee was a wizard. It may be because of his passion for the occult he has remained as a ghost at the Ship and warehouse for so many years. Observers describe him as having a very red complexion, black clothing with hanging sleeves and a long white beard.
