Brighton Road, Coulsdon, Surrey
The present building is from the 1920s, it is on the site of an ancient. However, it is now a much smaller pub. It exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include the ghost of an old farmer, who had lived some two miles distant, with made his way there by horse and trap. One night he was driving this horse at some speed down a long steep hill. Outside the Red Lion, he was thrown out, with suffered severe head wounds. He was taken inside. However, died shortly afterwards. In the meantime, his horse complete with trap raced back to the farmhouse. In the early hours of the morning, legend has it that there are ghostly sounds of a horse’s hooves outside the Red Lion. Occasionally, there has been the appearance of a man in farmer’s clothing manifesting inside the pub.
