Sugar Loaf

18 High Street, Market Harborough, Leicestershire

The name of the pub is curious and with history from the early 1700s. At that time, wealthy people bought sugar in cones, similar to a large ice cream cone. It became an instantly recognisable shape, with used for the most part at grocers’ shops. The present building was at one time such a shop, owned by Thomas Goward. He, his wife, three daughters, two shopmen and three domestic staff, all lived above the shop. In 1910, there was a severe fire throughout the building. Everyone except one shop worker escaped. His ghost still haunts the pub. When he manifests, he , witnesses describe, as wearing charred clothing and burns across his face.
