Commercial Road, Tideswell, Buxton, Derbyshire
Over 150 years ago, the husband of a then barmaid at the George disappeared. Despite her searching the countryside and local markets for years the woman, Sarah, then aged 55 never gave up hope. For several years after that, she hoped against hope he would return. Then she died. However, her ghost stays on at the George Hotel in the anticipation that he will. Several times, when she has manifested, she has terrified all who see her. Locals know Tideswell as Tidz or Tidsa. In addition, local residents are Sawyeds. This is owing to a traditional story about a farmer freeing his prize cow from a gate it had become entangled in by sawing its head off.
