The George II

70 Bute Street, Luton, Bedfordshire

The pub name is a rare one, with there should have been more of them named this. George 2nd (1683-1760) was a hero. He was the last English monarch to lead his troops into battle. This was at Dettingen in 1743, during the war of the Austrian Succession. The George 2nd is of an early Victorian style of pub, with a Second-grade listing as of special interest. It is on three storeys of red brick with Welsh slate roof. It is the first pub one comes across leaving the railway station. A man who expired when working on that railway line in the early 1900s haunts the building. Bystanders took his body to this pub for the police to attend with arrange an inquest. His ghost has frequently, witnesses saw, on the ground floor, in rough Victorian style working clothes
